Today is the eight year anniversary of Dan + Shay’s song “Tequila” being released out into the world! Happy Birthday to this incredible song that was written by Nicolle Galyon, Jordan Reynolds, and Dan Smyers! 🥳🎶🎉🥃 It would become the first multi-week number one hit for the country music duo in July of 2018!
Below is a screenshot of the second teaser the guys shared on their Instagram account of an agave plant on January 5, 2018 for the yet-to-be-named song! I initially thought the tune was going to be about the alcoholic drink, more of a drinking song, a subject that Smyers and Shay Mooney had not written about up until that point. It ended up being about the alcoholic beverage, but much more than that! “Tequila” is not a straight-up drinking song. It is about the male character remembering a past relationship “when I taste tequila.”
