Back in 2014, the three day West coast country music was broadcasted live on AXS TV. I have some memory of watching Dan + Shay's set on TV and being impressed by Shay Mooney's vocals, Dan Smyers' harmonies, and their energy onstage. The biggest thing that blew me away was how genuine they were. I could tell they were truly enjoying performing for the crowd.
This year, Stagecoach Music Festival is being streamed live on the Amazon Prime Video app, the Amazon Music app, as well as on the Twitch app through Sunday April 26. Last night (early Saturday morning for me watching on Eastern Daylight Time), I had the opportunity to watch the duo's set on the Palomino stage via the Amazon Music app livestream. From getting to see them perform live for the first time at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 14, 2014, to the most recent time at Van Andel Arena on March 14, 2024, and witnessing their live set at Stagecoach Music Festival early this morning, Smyers and Mooney somehow have gotten better each time, but still remain the most down-to-earth, genuine, humble human beings and artists.
Watching their set on television from the comfort of my living room couch, I could not stop smiling the entire time. They entered the stage singing their massive hit "10,000 Hours" that features pop star Justin Bieber. Bieber was not there to sing it with them, but it was still an incredible moment to kick off Dan + Shay's almost one hour slot.
From serenading the crowd with their first radio single "19 You + Me" about young summer love and their multi-week number one wedding song "Speechless", to increasing the energy level in the room with their hit "All To Myself", and watching Mooney get emotional while performing their second number one "From The Ground Up" inspired by their grandparents' love stories, sharing the message of their newest single "Say So" live for the first time, and ending the night with an incredible moment on their biggest crossover hit "Tequila", and other fun moments in between, it was a set that was so worth staying up extra late for!
There were plenty of genuine moments displayed by the duo throughout the night. After the first couple of songs, Smyers grabbed his cell phone and took a picture and video of the crowd to document the massive moment. After performing "Speechless" and the crowd would not stop applauding and cheering, Smyers was seen taking off his guitar and laying on his back on the stage, taking everything in. Mooney was seen getting emotional while singing "From The Ground Up". There were other times during the set when Mooney had some "pinch me" moments. Again, I could tell that he and Smyers were truly enjoying doing what they love up on that stage.
