Here is my eighth Saturday Spotlight that I did with myself! I thought it would be cool to kick off 2026 by reintroducing myself to my readers and giving you more insight into me as a Dan + Shay fan!
In this eighth session, you will learn about my favorite Dan + Shay albums and songs, a few of my favorite moments from their concerts that stick out to me, details from my two meet and greets (so far) with the guys, and much more!
I also included some pictures from each of my concerts that I have attended. **I also plan to add more pictures, some videos, and a couple more questions and answers to this post in the next couple of days! I will post a social media update when I do! **
Please enjoy reading my eighth Dan + Shay Fan Spotlight with myself!
Stacy (S): When did you become a fan of Dan + Shay? Was it in the beginning or later on in their careers? What was the first song of theirs that you heard on the radio? What was your first impression of hearing them on the radio and then getting to know them through social media?
Stacy (S): The first song of
Dan + Shay’s that I heard on the radio was “19 You + Me” on my local country radio
station B93.7 FM a couple of times in the fall of 2013. However, I did not know the name
of the duo or the title of the song. I remember finding every aspect of the
song to be very refreshing to my ears (the vocals, production, and song
subject), but for some reason I did not think to look up the name of the
artists or the song title at the time.Fast forward to
the last week of March, 2014 when I was officially introduced to the duo and
became a fan of them instantly. I had a free Spotify account at the time and
noticed a banner on the application that said Dan + Shay’s debut album Where
It All Began was streaming for free a full week before its release on April
1. I looked at the track listing and noticed “19 You + Me” on it, the song that
I had heard on the radio in late 2013. After one listen through of the entire
project, the debut single and “Nothin’ Like You” were my two favorite songs,
but I loved the other ten tracks as well. From hearing “Show You Off”, the
cheeky, fun song that kicked of the album all the way, to ending it with the
piano-infused, heartbreak tune “I Heard Goodbye”, I felt like the duo took me
on a ride.
As soon as I
listened to their album the week prior to it coming out, I immediately followed
the duo account and their individual accounts on social media. Early on,
Twitter (now X) was my main way to connect with the guys. They started
favoriting (liking) my tweets right away, and within a week, they started to
interact with me even more. This included getting a reply to one of my tweets
and even following me back! When I found out it was the guys themselves doing
the interacting (Dan Smyers the majority of the time), I could tell that they
were the real deal. To this day, Smyers continues to control their social media
accounts.
(S): How many times have you seen the duo in concert? What is your favorite venue that you have seen them play at? Tell me about a few of the concerts that stand out to you.
(S): I have seen the
duo six times in concert so far. Each of the venues I have had the opportunity
to watch them perform at were special to me for different reasons, especially
when they played at my alma mater Grand Valley State University at the Fieldhouse Arena on April 10, 2016!
However, my favorite venue was when they performed at Van Andel Arena on March
14, 2024 as part of The Heartbreak On The Map Tour. Even though I was up in the nosebleed seats with my friends, I still
felt connected with the duo. I had not seen them in concert in 2017, so my
excitement for this night was off the charts. It was one for the books that I
will always remember.Watching them start
out playing at The Intersection, a small, intimate venue, on October 12, 2014 and October 18, 2015 2015, then moving on to a much larger crowd at the Grand Valley State
University Fieldhouse Arena on April 10, 2016, to opening up for Darius Rucker on his Good for a Good Time Tour on August 19, 2016, and then seeing them perform
for an even larger crowd (2,000+) at 20 Monroe Live on April 6, 2017 it has been incredible to watch to watch the guys
blossom and become the headliners that they are today.
Each of their
concerts that I have attended have been incredibly enjoyable. If I had to pick
three moments that stuck out to me, the first would be when the guys crowd
surfed at The Intersection show in 2015. At the beginning of their set, Dan
announced to the audience that they wanted to crowd surf later to celebrate
their current single “Nothin’ Like You” getting close to number one on the
country radio chart. I somehow missed the memo and did not know what was going
on when they started to make their way into the sea of people. All of a sudden,
Dan was above me and my friend Stephanie. A rush of energy ran through my body
that I had never felt before. Everyone had to do their part to get both members
of the duo to the back of the room and return to the stage in a safe manner. It
was a thrilling experience that I will never forget. The second moment would be
when I got to hear “From The Ground Up” live for the first time in 2016. I was
up in the balcony with my friend Sarah and I got chills watching the guys sing
this song that means so much to them. The last moment would be hearing
“Tequila” live for the first time at Van Andel Arena on March 14, 2014. They
ended the concert with their first multi-week number one. Witnessing Shay
Mooney hold the final “yeah” for several seconds is a memory I will cherish
forever.
(S): How many times have you had the opportunity to meet Dan + Shay? What was the first meet + greet like? Did anything they say stick out to you that you still remember today? Tell me about a few of your other meet + greets with the guys that were special.
(S): I am grateful to
have met Dan + Shay twice. After my first show on October 12, 2014,
if you bought a piece of merchandise, you could stand in line for to say hello and
take a picture with the guys. I was nervous, but also very excited. I remember
walking up to them and receiving a hug from both members of the duo. Dan immediately
recognized me and knew my name from social media. Then Shay remembered me too. Dan
thanked me for listening to their music and promoting it on social media. After our
brief conversation, we took a meet and greet picture together. My friend
Stephanie also joined me for a second meet and greet picture with the guys.At my second
concert on October 18, 2015, I bought a VIP package and got the opportunity to meet the duo for the second year in a row before they took the stage later that night. They remembered me from social
media again and I received more hugs from the guys. Dan + Shay
both thanked me for consistently requesting their current single “Nothin’ Like
You” at the time. I told them I was happy to do it because I thought they were
so talented and deserved to have to their songs played on the radio. After we
talked briefly, we took a meet and greet picture together.
I hope to get
the opportunity in the near future to say hello, thank them for everything else
they have done for me on social media and beyond since 2015, and update my meet
and greet picture!
(S): What is the name of your local country radio station(s) that you listen to? Do they play Dan + Shay's songs often? Which songs do they play the most?
(S): My
two local country radio stations are B93.7 FM and Thunder 107.3 FM. B93.7 FM
plays “Tequila” and “Speechless” on a weekly basis. Thunder 107.3 FM plays “Save
Me The Trouble” occasionally. I mostly listen to Dan + Shay's music on Spotify these days, but when the radio is on in the car, I will catch the songs listed above occasionally. To this day, every time I hear one of their previous number one tunes on the radio, I get very excited, cannot stop smiling, and sing along in my head!
(S): If you had to pick your top two favorite Dan + Shay albums and top five overall songs (including from their Christmas album), what would they be? Tell me why those songs and the two albums overall connect with you.
(S): If you had to pick your top two favorite Dan +
Shay albums and top five overall songs (including from their Christmas album),
what would they be? Tell me why those songs and the two albums overall connect
with you. While I love all of their albums, if I had to pick my top two, I
would choose their debut album Where It
All Began because it is very nostalgic.
Every time I listen to it, I am brought back to March, 2014 when I heard it for
the first time. My second pick would be their Bigger Houses album. I was
able to connect with every single song on the project. I could relate to the heartbreak
songs (experiencing grief and job loss in the last few years), the gratitude
songs, and every other one in between. If I had to pick my top five overall Dan
+ Shay songs at the moment, they would be “19 You + Me” (the song that
introduced me to them), “Nothin’ Like You” (I requested this song a lot to help
the guys get their first number one at country radio), “Heartbreak On The Map”
(a song that has helped me heal navigating through heartbreak), “Heaven + Back”
(a song that makes me smile and think about my late grandmother every time I
hear it), and “Breakin’ Up With A Broken Heart” (a song that has helped me let
go of what has happened in the past and move on to do other things that make me
happy, including starting this blog last May!). I have to sneak a sixth favorite
song to my list. “Happy New Year” from It’s Officially Christmas: The Double Album was penned by Dan Smyers. It is such a heartfelt, touching song. I can
relate to the overall message and every time I hear it, I get emotional.
(S): If you had the opportunity to have dinner with Dan + Shay and spend quality time with them afterward, what questions would you ask them? What else would you talk about in a conversation with them?
(S): I would ask them more details
about their first meeting at Dan’s house party on December 7, 2014. I also
would want to know what it like walking the carpets at award shows, performing at
them, and how they felt every time their names were called when winning an
award. In addition, I think it would be fun just to have an every day
conversation with them, thanking them for all that they have done for me over
the years, how much I enjoy listening to their music. I would also ask them what their days off from the studio/being on the road look like.
(S): Is there anything else you would like to add that I did not mention above?
(S): Dan + Shay have made a huge impact on my life with their genuine music, at their concerts, my interactions with them on social media and vice versa, and so much more. I have been able to introduce all of my friends to their music. I have also made quite a few new friends through following them on social media. I do not know where I would be today if I had not stumbled upon their first album on Spotify back in 2014! Cheers to listening to new Dan + Shay music soon, hopefully attending another of their concerts, interacting with them more on social media, and all of the other wonderful things that they have in store for their fans!
