If you read my post yesterday, you know that Dan + Shay were in the studio last Friday to record their version of Taylor Swift's 2010 country song "Back To December". I posted multiple links and a couple of videos of the duo documenting the process, giving their fans a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes when they are busy making new music.
In the past, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney have posted behind-the-scenes videos while working on their music videos. When it came to recording and producing their number one song "I Should Probably Go To Bed" in Smyers' home studio during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are two videos on social media and YouTube, one of Smyers walking through how he produced the hit song on his laptop and another of the lead vocalist (Mooney) who talked about how the song came to life. Stay tuned for posts that surround the music videos and "I Should Probably Go To Bed" behind-the-scenes clips!
Besides these examples, the Grammy-winning duo had not really let the fans in on what it looks like when they record a song in the studio until last week when they were working on "Back To December". The look-ins were very short, but we still got a glimpse of some of the steps in the studio that it takes to bring a song to life for an album and for streaming services. I hope they do more of these clips and and videos in the future because I find it all incredibly fascinating!
I continue to dream that one day I will have a chance to be in Nashville and have the chance to watch Smyers and Mooney make magic in the recording studio. I know they both work extremely hard to make the best music possible for us and I want to see that in action. It would be such a special, awe-inspiring experience for me as a fan!
Yesterday evening, the duo posted another update video on the cover, sitting on a couch at one of their homes. When they were done recording it on Friday, the next step was for Smyers to start mixing the track to make it sound good.
"Dan's been working on the "Back To December" mix all weekend," Mooney said as the video began. "I'm hearing it live for the very first time right now."
Smyers hit play on his laptop and you could hear the piano introduction and Mooney singing the first lyric to the song, "I'm so glad you made time to see me."
Next, he played the song's bridge and said it's "my favorite part." I (as a fan) think it already sounds great, especially when the lead singer increased his vocals toward the end singing, "I go back to December." The producer put his hand up in the air.
To finish, Smyers played the last few piano notes, then asked Mooney, "What did you think?' "Great work," the lead vocalist responded. "I'm still dialin'," the producer said next. That meant he is still working on the mix to make it sound even better.
"Sounds pretty dialed to me," Mooney answered. "Wow."
Smyers ended the video by telling their fans when to expect the full studio version of the song to be released.
"We're gonna get it out soon," Smyers announced. "Stay tuned."
"Woo," Mooney responded and then said "Bye" before turning the camera off.
I am looking forward to bringing you Dan + Shay's next update as soon as they post it! Based on their goal to get it out to us as fast as possible and how incredibly hard they have been working on it, I have a feeling they might release it as early as this Friday! Stay tuned to see if I am right or if the duo will have different plans on the release date! 😉
Below is Dan + Shay's Shorts video from last night of the two of them listening to the mix together, Mooney hearing it for the first time, courtesy of the duo's YouTube channel. Enjoy! 🎵
