Dan + Shay have always done a great job when it comes to the creation of music videos set to their hits and non-radio songs. Dan Smyers' friend Patrick Tracy has also been heavily involved with the majority of these clips. Some of them are fun and crazy ("We Should Get Married" and "Steal My Love", for example), some had a script that followed the song's story ("From The Ground Up" and "19 You + Me, for example), others have a different storyline from the song's original story ("Tequila" and "How Not To"), while the majority of them are simple; they feature the duo lip-syncing the lyrics while the track is played in the background ("For The Both Of Us" and "Heartbreak On The Map, for example). Stay tuned for future posts where I break down each of these music videos as well as every other music video Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney have released over the years! In this post, I will break down the "Heartbreak On The Map" clip.
"Heartbreak On The Map", which aptly was the name of the duo's 2024 Winter and Spring tour, was in the first batch of new tracks that was released on July 14, 2023. The music video for the song was also released at that time and features the duo lip syncing the lyrics in three different scenes: the two guys sitting at a booth in a bar, Mooney driving both of them around town in a vehicle, and Dan + Shay sitting on stage (on barstools) at a bar performing.
You watch all three scenes multiple times throughout the clip. It opens with the duo sitting at the booth inside the bar with rain pouring down on the window next to them. Smyers has his legs and feet up on his side of the booth while he lip syncs his harmonies and plays his acoustic guitar. On the other side of the booth is Mooney who is sitting and lip syncing. There is a whiskey glass in front of both Smyers and Mooney holding some sort of alcohol. They do mention whiskey in the lyrics, so maybe that is what is in their glasses!
The second scene features Mooney driving a vehicle down the road and lip syncing the lyrics while Smyers is lip syncing in the passenger seat, with his right arm and hand hanging onto the outside of the car. The viewer does not see what type of vehicle they are driving, as only the inside is shown during the clip. The song features lyrics about states where the girl might be now who broke up with the guy, so I believe that this scene represents those lyrics in the chorus.
In the last scene, the guys are featured sitting on barstools up on a stage at a bar. Once again, Smyers is lip syncing his harmonies and pretending to play his guitar. On the other hand, Mooney is sitting right beside him lip syncing the lead vocal. During this scene, you can see someone shooting pool in the distance.
I love this music video because it simple and to the point. There are no gimmicks that get in the way of the duo performing the lyrics in each scene. When this clip first came out, I had it on repeat for quite a while. I was also able to really connect to the lyrics because I had and still am experiencing heartbreak from loss of a few close family members earlier in 2023 as well as in 2022. Stay tuned for a future post where I break down the story of the song and talk more about my connection with it!
