In my post from August 27th where I wrote a summary about Dan + Shay's first stops out East on their very first radio tour in 2013-2014, I mentioned that Shay Mooney stated country music trio Rascal Flatts was one of his biggest influences growing up. In fact early on, some people thought that the new duo sounded like Rascal Flatts. I was able to hear that similarity on a couple of their songs early on, but overall, I really thought that Dan Smyers and Mooney had their own distinctive sound, especially hearing Smyers' harmonies flowing extremely well alongside his partner's lead vocals. The one song of theirs that sounds like a Rascal Flatts song to me is "Let Me Get Over Her" from the Good Things album. Stay tuned for a future post with my commentary on that heartbreak track.
The duo have also had a hand in writing four of Rascal Flatts' songs over the years and they also went on tour with the group in 2018. I have plenty more to say on those topics in future posts as well!
Since Dan + Shay have these connections with the country music group, they have posted some covers of their previous hits. One of them was "My Wish", which they posted on their YouTube channel and social media outlets on June 23, 2016. The duo performed a flawless version of the song's chorus. If you listen very closely, you can hear Smyers' gorgeous harmonies, which are equal with Mooney's soaring lead vocal. The harmonist and producer of the duo is also playing his acoustic guitar. At the end when Mooney is singing "my wish", the talented vocalist extended the note on both of the words, showing off his range.
Below is the video of Dan + Shay covering "My Wish". Enjoy!
